Crystal Bridges - a MUST SEE!
We enjoyed a nice 2 1/2 hour drive to Bentonville on Saturday to join many many others in visiting Crystal Bridges, a fabulous museum of American masterworks from the colonial era to contemporary times (plus special exhibits) from the private collection of Alice Walton (Sam's daughter) plus others. The museum is a series of pavilions built around two creek-fed ponds, including 6 walking trails. (In beautiful weather, this will be amazing!) The huge sprawling tree at the entrance is a sculpture!
We took a guided tour of six masterpieces from Julia, who is an artist herself as well as an art teacher - incredibly wonderful. Two of the pieces were "Kindred Spirits" by the artist Asher Durand and Norman Rockwell's "Rosie the Riveter" which was truly an eye-opening lecture. Did you know that NR had Rosie pose...but the very muscular arms she displays are taken exactly from Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel painting of the prophet Isaiah?? Rockwell wanted to show the strength of the prophet Isaiah in stomping out sin, while Rosie's strength was stomping on the book "Mein Kampf" under her feet. When you go (and when we go back again in May to see even more) please do take a guided tour.
Our day trip included lunch at Eleven, the restaurant within the Museum, which was delicious. This was a GREAT day!
This museum is truly a treasure. Admission for everyone is underwritten by Wal-Mart, so its free for all of us. What a gift! And what an incredible addition to our already fantastic Ozarks.
